The much-hyped Apple iPad finally made its long-awaited entrance to the UK last week, and what an entrance it was! Apple fans and obsessives queued all night outside the company’s flagship Regent Street store in London to get their hands on the ‘it’ gadget of the year so far. I’m still not really sure what it does, but I really want one. What dark magic has Mr Jobs cast on us?

Billed as something that will plug the gap between a smart phone and a laptop, the iPad aims to succeed where the Windows-based tablet PCs have failed. They also seem to have Amazon’s Kindle firmly in their sights. Selling over 2 million units in 60 days is quite an impressive feat – anyone planning on launching a product would do well to analyse Apple’s marketing strategy in the lead up to the iPad’s release.

Why I want an iPad

So what does it do? Well, you can read your newspaper on it during your morning commute, watch a movie whilst on the move, do your emails, surf the web, all the usual stuff. Stephen Fry is a big fan of its usability: ‘The speed, the responsiveness, the smooth glide of it, the richness and detail of the display, the heft in your hand, the rightness of the actions and gestures that you employ, untutored and instinctively, it’s not just a scaled up iPhone or a scaled-down multitouch enhanced laptop – it is a whole new kind of device’, he gushed.

But the main selling point is that it looks SEXY. I just want one. I don’t need it – it won’t do anything that my iPhone and laptop can’t do together, but I can imagine it making my life better in ways that shouldn’t be possible… I really can.

So, am I going to fork out £429 for one? No. My iPhone may have cost as much, but that was disguised by a monthly contract. I can’t replace my phone with an iPad and I can’t replace my laptop with one either, so this will be something I must own AS WELL AS those, not instead of both. I guess if I could use the iPad do all my laptop-based tasks and use it as a comedy-sized smart phone, I’d be joining the Regent Street queues. For now, this one is going on the backburner.

There’s something that captures your imagination when you open an Apple box and first see your new gadget. That is certainly the case with the Apple iPad. The first thing you see is the device itself with its large screen. Also included in the box is a cable, power adapter and the famous apple stickers. But was the box worth opening in the first place? Is the iPad really worth getting?

The first thing you need to know is what the iPad is for. After all you can’t review a product without knowing what it’s for, right? Well Steve Jobs from Apple said that the iPad sits in-between the iPhone and the Macbook. It isn’t the best communications device and it isn’t for serious work. The iPad is the perfect device for consuming media. Watch movies, show photos, surf the internet, answer e-mails and read books. That’s what the iPad is for. It’s a device for around the house. I’ve put that statement to the test.

Design

But before I get into the media stuff let’s look at the design first. It’s great. The back is all aluminum which makes it feel really classy and decent against scratching. The apple logo sits in the middle.

The front is the same as the iPhone. It’s glass from edge to edge with the only buttons being the home button, volume, sleep and screen orientation key. The edges of the screen are now wider which is useful because it enables you to hold the device with one hand without touching the screen. The black and gray contrast between the buttons and the body looks great. The device is very thin and the aluminum border (metal one is gone) makes it one of the best looking gadgets ever made.

The internet & Keyboard

Internet is really important in a tablet, laptop, smartphone well actually in pretty much everything. Luckily Apple knew this and they’ve worked hard on getting safari just right on the iPad, and they have. The iPad is simply the best internet surfing experience. It’s great to see a whole webpage in front of you that you can manipulate without using a mouse or other pointing device. In fact the only downside is the chunkiness in using tabs. It’s not fast and it requires you to first press a button and then the page of your choice. I wish it was more like the PC/Mac way with all of your tabs just a single click away.

How does the iPad type? A lot of people asked this question prior to the launch and I can say that I’ve no problem typing. Portrait mode types fine but can get awkward when you’re both holding the device and typing at the same time. But in landscape mode with the iPad on your lap things really come alive. It types just like a normal notebook. And if you mistype, the iPad quickly corrects you and predicts the word you wanted to spell. It works just like the iPhone which was a fine system. You might have to get used to the lack of feedback though. Your only guide is the screen and for some people it may take some time getting used to.

media

Now let’s talk media. First of all watching movies is great and a way better experience than a laptop or smartphone can offer. The laptop is simply too heavy for the job and the iPhone’s screen is just too small.

Apple included the video app to further enhance the video watching experience and it works great. The app nicely shows a cover art of the movie and it’s very easy to go to a curtain chapter or read a description of the movie. I think a lot of people will really fall in love with this feature.

Another big selling point is the ability to show photo’s to friends and family. The device can function as a digital photo stand during parties, or you can use the built in app for a great photo viewing experience. The device will tell you where the photos were taken (if geo-tagged) and it will tell faces. Zooming in and out on photos or sweeping across your collection feel great. It’s much better than on the iPhone because the larger screen really lends itself for smoother gestures and the great IPS screen shows every detail.

Books are hot again. Apple made an app specifically for reading and buying, it’s called iBooks. The app will display all your books on a bookshelf. Tab the library button and the bookshelf will flip to reveal a store. But it’s not all great because the store lacks proper navigation. For example you can’t navigate by category or publication date. It really doesn’t make sense that it lacks this feature, so the store is actually only useful if you already know what you want. But the reading itself is great. It even works in the dark! Take that physical books.

The iPod app is also present. It looks a lot like you’re used to in itunes. You can display your music in lists or album covers and see what’s playing. Cover flow is mysteriously missing though, but probably won’t be missed.

Tab a song and it will display the album cover. Tab again and you get access to the music playing keys. The app is really great to use because the 9.7″ display allows you to see all of your songs.

Other provided apps are: calendar, contacts, notes, app store, iTunes, maps, and YouTube. They all work great as expected from Apple. calendar does exactly what you expect it to do. You can watch a whole month without scrolling or tapping, which makes it particularly useful.

Contacts divides the screen in two, one side it shows all the details and on the other the names of your contacts.

Maps is greatly improved on the iPad. Apple did it by only adding one new feature: streetview. And it works easy. Just drop a pin somewhere and press the street button. In fact the streetview works way more intuitive on the iPad than it does on the actual Google site.

Last but not least is YouTube. It’s really nice that you can see both the comments and the videos on one screen in portrait. Because let’s face it, we all read the comments. In landscape the video fills the whole screen, which makes it a pleasure to watch.

Apps

The app store allows you to download any iPhone app on your iPad. But you can also download apps made specifically for the device.

iPhone apps look awful on the iPad. The screen in 1:1 mode is too small to use and looks silly with all that unused space around it. Displaying the app in 2x modes isn’t recommended either because it just looks plain ugly. I can see every pixel in this mode.

iPad apps are great though. The larger screen allows for some exciting stuff. Zombies vs Aliens for example is simply amazing to play. It looks very crisp and the controls are as intuitive as can be.

The iWork package from Apple is another example of screen space used well. Making documents and presentations is easy. In pages I was surprised to see the task bar disappear in landscape mode though.

The future will tell if the bigger screen will allow for some great new apps. I’m a little worried though because of the speed of the device.

Problems

So media is great on the iPad but unfortunately not everything is. Communicating for example isn’t really possible because the iPad doesn’t have a front facing camera. So grandma won’t be able to video chat with her grandchildren in the garden. And the iPad isn’t fast. It feels zippy but the apps aren’t what they could be and at times the device slowed down a bit. Another problem is the build quality. I could slightly wiggle the volume button and sleep button by holding my fingers on it. On the iPhone for example the buttons are way more stiff. Another thing about the build quality is the vibration that you get when the speakers are playing. It’s probably the fair amount of bass that the device can produce but it makes the device feel more fragile in a way.

conclusion

The iPad is amazing in its own little way. It’s not going to replace the phone. It’s not going to replace the notebook. No, it can’t do any of those things. Instead it becomes the best way to interact with your media. Movies, music, books, photos and the internet. And sure you can work on it via the iWork packages from apple. it works fine but not good enough to produce 10.000+ word documents.

The iPad is an amazing tablet and I hope Apple fixes the shortcomings in the next version.

Firstly, the name itself has caused many heads to turn with raised eyebrows. Based on some iPad reviews, certainly a well-known manufacturer of excellent IT products could have come up with a better name. Apparently, earlier options were thrown in the air and only iPad made the cut.

iPad’s physical appearance is not overly spectacular. It comes with clean cut lines, smooth curves and a glossy black bezel bordering the screen. Reviewers were initially critical on the wide bezel but later accepted its practicality in avoiding accidental contact with the touch screen. Since it bears a resemblance to its family of past appliances, it reduces the learning curve. The lack of a USB port or SD card reader, common devices in use today, is a let-down. Absence of a web camera also disallows the user from conducting video chats. Screen quality is good with its wide dimension and sharp resolution, allowing the user to read and watch content with clarity.

Once again, being built on the same operating system as its family of appliances, iPad interface is easy learning for past users. For first time users, the interface may take some getting used to as iPad doesn’t follow the conventional method of files, folders and windows. Lack of multi-tasking abilities is also a perplexing issue for most users.

Since its built-in web browser doesn’t support the most common platform for rich media experience, iPad reviews are disappointing when viewing other sites’ pages built on this platform. Fortunately, iPad interface is good for reading e-books with its friendly layout, clear display, built-in dictionary, easy search and bookmark options. Viewing of streaming videos is great via its large screen.

Its compatibility with other apps within its family of devices provides a seamless experience as the user is able to synchronize information between iPad and these other devices. Third party applications come aplenty, chargeable or free. Some apps work really well for readers of news publications and comics, whereas others focus on streaming video via its Wi-Fi or GPS connection, Wi-Fi being the faster option.

Battery life received favorable iPad reviews as tests by user groups outlasted the manufacturer’s claim.

iPad’s manufacturer is touted to be a formidable force to its old rival, possibly even topping it. Whether it will ring true remains to be seen in iPad’s ability to go past its limitations and live up to the publicity.

If you didn’t already know, the Apple iPad will be released in Australia on May 28. Analysts predict that up to 50% of Australians are planning to buy one. That’s an incredible prediction, but while it appears that the media hype around the iPad knows no bounds, one has to ask themselves why the iPad is receiving so much attention and being touted as the “next big thing” when technically the device is rather underwhelming to say the least.

Before looking at why there is such a massive media circus surrounding the iPad phenomenon, let’s take a look at what the capabilities of the iPad are, or should we say what they are not…

What Can’t the iPad Do?

The best way to describe the iPad is that it closely resembles a larger version of the iPod Touch. It uses the same operating system as the iPod Touch and the iPhone. Unlike the iPhone, you cannot make phone calls on the iPad. The iPad has no DVD drive, no Flash memory slots, no USB ports and no webcam. The storage capacity is quite small for a machine that does not offer USB or memory expansions, coming with only 16, 32 and 64 gigabyte models. The idea there seems to be that most of your data should be stored online.

Another controversial detraction from is that the iPad does not support Adobe Flash. Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, has assured customers that we are all better off without it and that new standards such as HTML5 will eventually replace Flash as the standard for online video, interactive media and all the other wonderful things that Flash has brought to the online world. Meanwhile, no Flash support means no ABC iView, no Flash games on Facebook and MySpace.

To connect the iPad to the Internet, the standard model is Wi-Fi only, with the more expensive model offering a non-standard SIM-card slot for 3G mobile access

. The Wi-Fi option has been suffering a lot of signal strength issues that Apple promises to fix. The 3G SIM option leaves customers vulnerable to telcos that offer iPad-only 3G data plans. This means that you cannot use the 3G SIM card from your mobile phone and you are stuck with whatever the telcos choose to charge for their special iPad data plans.

The iPad, like the iPhone and iPad Touch, is touch screen driven and therefore has no built-in keyboard. The touch screen is pretty slick and intuitive, but if you are attempting to tap out an email or write documents, the iPad becomes a cumbersome tool for students and business people. Some business people might find it useful; photographers who want to share photos or sales people who want to show clients electronic brochures and such, but if you want to use it as a serious productivity tool it may frustrate you a bit. It is true that you can buy a external keyboard along with adapters for digital phones etc that you pay a premium for, but I find that carrying so many expensive accessories around defeats the purpose of portability in devices like this.

There are plenty of alternative tablet PCs and netbooks that are technically superior so what makes the iPad exceptional in the eyes of the mainstream media? As most people are aware, News Ltd and the print media in general are experiencing falling advertising revenues from print media advertising, with predictions that television is also under threat from Internet advertising models.

Apple’s iPad appears to be the answer to the old media’s empire’s prayers: a centralised information distribution network that doesn’t give the news away for free and presents value to advertisers. The Australian’s iPad app shows an enhanced newspaper style format with embedded video. The device promises to offer easy consumption that centrally controls much of the Internet’s content through iStore applications. This new darling of the big media and telco moguls would appear to be coming at the expense of consumer by limiting their choices at every opportunity. On the other hand, there are plenty of alternatives to this kind of restrictive technology.
